Summer Art Studio
Summer Art Studio is a creative holiday programme inviting children and young people to explore art through play, experimentation, and close observation of the world around them. Each day introduces a new theme inspired by the exhibitions at Koppel Villa, nature, and the materials that surround us.
Together we will discover whether paint can be made from plants, explore the surprising possibilities of ordinary paper, investigate how light creates images, and consider how time transforms works of art. Working with natural materials, recycled paper, plants, and unconventional artistic techniques, participants will discover that making art is not only about creating a finished piece, but also about observing, experimenting, exploring, and finding their own creative solutions.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The Summer Art Studio takes place Tuesday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm.
No reservation is required.
JULY
21 July – Paint Beyond the Tube
Can an ordinary cabbage become artists' paint?
Together we will experiment with cabbage juice, observe its transformations, and discover that colour can emerge from the most unexpected places.
22 July – The Language of Shapes
Inspired by the Traces of Clay exhibition and the garden surrounding the villa, we will search for recurring forms found in nature. Through drawing and experimentation, we will discover that even the most complex structures grow from simple shapes.
23 July – Following the Trail of Paper
Old paper will be given a new life. We will explore the process of papermaking, experiment with different textures, and embed plants, imprints, and our own traces into handmade paper.
24 July – Playing with Images
Can we trust what we see in a painting?
Some paintings appear so convincing that they can easily be mistaken for photographs. After exploring the Paradoxes of the Real exhibition, we will become art detectives, uncovering how artists use colour, shadow, and detail to create remarkably lifelike illusions.
28 July – Hypericum perforatum
Some plants hold more than fragrance or colour. We will discover their stories and create our own memory maps inspired by the exhibition Memories That Become Mine.
29 July – Can the Sun Paint a Picture?
This time, light—not the artist—takes centre stage. We will experiment with a photographic technique in which images are created by the action of sunlight.
30 July – Shadow Hunt
We will observe how light transforms the shapes around us, capture shadows, and discover that even what seems invisible can become part of an artwork.
31 July – This Is Perhaps a Pipe!
What can become art?
Inspired by the exhibition Desire for an Enemy, we will explore the gallery as a space filled with stories, movement, and relationships. Becoming part of the exhibition ourselves, we will transform the space around us and discover how our own actions can shape a work of art.
AUGUST
4 August – Purple
Inspired by the work of artist Katalin Madarász Decsi, we will become alchemists for a day. By experimenting with natural pigments, we will discover how acidic and alkaline solutions can dramatically change colours.
5 August – One Hundred Ways!
One subject, countless perspectives, and unexpected transformations. Inspired by Miloš Balgavý's ceramic sculptures, we will discover how collaborative creativity can change forms, meanings, and the way we see the world.
6 August – Screen, Paper, Shredder
Every sheet of paper tells a story—and perhaps marks the beginning of a new one. Together we will explore paper recycling as a space for discovery, experimentation, and play, revealing the creative possibilities hidden within paper pulp.
7 August – Organzilla
What if you could step inside a work of art?
Juraj Poliak's sound installation offers an experience that unfolds beyond what we can see. Together we will discover how art can sound, respond, and come alive when we become part of it.
11 August – Transformations
How do you capture something that has no fixed shape and is constantly changing? We will search for hidden images in our surroundings and explore how light, movement, and careful observation can become creative tools.
12 August – Photo Experiments
What can be hidden within a single glance?
Exploring the exhibition Photorealism and Hyperrealism in Slovak Painting, we will enter a world of detail, light, and images that exist on the boundary between photography and painting. Using anthotype printing, we will experiment with unusual ways of capturing reality.
13 August – Traces of Memory
How much can a single memory contain?
The work of Monika Pascoe Mikyšková invites us into a world of nature, herbs, and stories shared with a grandmother. Together we will discover how everyday moments can be transformed into art.
14 August – Interventions
A work of art never has to be completely finished.
We will treat posters as spaces for play, transformation, and fresh perspectives. Through our own creative interventions, we will discover how a dialogue can emerge between an existing artwork and our imagination.
