The exhibition Voyage in Liquid Times presents works of contemporary Slovak visual art that explore themes of navigation and nautical imagery. Imagination and metaphor associated with water, fluidity, and seafaring are currently being developed across a wide range of contexts, discourses, and genres.
Despite the ever-present risk of shipwreck, a voyage is inherently anchored in hope—the hope of reaching a harbor. Its potential success depends on orientation and navigation, making it a powerful metaphor for seeking direction, staying on course, and justifying the effort needed to withstand the shifting, adverse, and often unpredictable conditions of life.
Because sailing serves as a metaphor for human existence, interpretations of nautical imagery naturally lead us to reflect on meaning and values. The featured artists explore the theme of voyage through various visual media and creative strategies. Their depictions of navigation serve as commentary on a wide array of existential, ecological, political, and social issues.
To contemplate a voyage as a form of movement that reflects living is to be constantly challenged to reconsider our own position and the perspective from which we view the world. It confronts us with the urgent need to assess our current state: Where are we? What are the sailing and navigational conditions? What markers guide us? And what destination do we anticipate?
The evocative power and enduring relevance of nautical metaphors lie in their ability to be continuously reinterpreted—especially in times of significant societal change. This exhibition is therefore conceived as an invitation to observe the transformations, updates, and multiple reinterpretations of the ancient image of the voyage in our contemporary liquid times.
